Killing for tusks is a particularly gruesome trade. Elephants are intelligent animals whose sophisticated social ties are exploited by poachers. They will often shoot young elephants to draw in a grieving parent, which is then killed for it’s ivory
The population size was about 1.3 million in 1979. That current number is around 600,000, is decreasing by about 38,000 each passing year. These mammals could face complete extinction within the next 15 years.
